Sherreme asked me this question last week when I posted some of my favourite memes on relationships and shadow. For those of you who have known me for a loooong time, you know Pete and I have always been mirrors for each other. Our love has always had flame and fire. We've been in relationship for 14 years and we can still be awful at communicating.
Hello samskaras (undigested experiences and emotions). Hello vikalpas (tightly held beliefs and stories).
Hello old wounds, familiar triggers, accountability, emotional maturity, self-reflection and the spiritual practice that is romantic relationships.
Last weekend we fought. And, with a little help from Satsang last Sunday, this is was what I learnt from the battle ...
⚡️ Play is a doorway out of conflict
⚡️ Don’t take your stories too seriously
⚡️ When you’re triggered you are further away from truth
⚡️ Speak to the awareness beneath the ego
⚡️ When you’re digging your heels in, remember you don’t know
⚡️ Ask for a hug when you need one
The question I’m currently sitting with is … what would happen if my shadow parts made friends with my partner’s shadow parts? Is that even possible? I can befriend my shadow aspects but what if I was more compassionate and curious about his?
Shadow work is when we get in touch with the unseen parts of ourselves but I also want to get in touch with the unseen parts of the person I love. I'm pretty sure he will feel more seen and safe if I get curious when he gets defensive.
I guess the truth is that my shadow parts don't want to be curious and compassionate 😂 so how can I anchor myself in awareness when they come out to play? Maybe that's a question you might also like to sit with.
